Batteries for UPS systems

 

UPS-Systems are now standard equipment in supplying uninterrupted energy to servers and other IT units. These systems are mainly used in critical areas such as hospitals, computer centers, signal boxes, etc. The power supply in such systems is mostly provided by rechargeable batteries with a voltage of 12V and different capacities depending on the system and its functionalities. Lead accumulators are used, which are divided into 5-year, 10-year and 12+ year batteries according to their lifetime. The batteries are the most important and most sensitive component of a UPS system and must therefore be checked at defined intervals.

Batteries for emergency power systems

 

Emergency power systems also offer power supply security, much like UPS systems. Especially for security systems such as smoke extraction, fire alarm systems, burglar alarm systems, emergency lighting systems, etc. protecting life and protecting property. While in UPS systems the power bypass is usually used to back up data and to terminate the system in an orderly manner or to bridge the time until the emergency power systems are used, the emergency power systems supply the security systems with power for a longer period of time. Maintenance-free accumulators are also used here, mostly lead-fleece (AGM) or lead gel (GEL) accumulators with VdS approval. Exceptions here are batteries for emergency power generators, which are intended to start the gensets and not for the power supply. Here "wet" batteries (also called starter batteries) are often used.


According to the set-up of the system, the connected systems are protected against the following faults:

  • Power failure
  • Over voltage 
  • Under voltage
  • Frequency changes 
  • Harmonic oscillations

 

With the application of multiple batteries in the system it is strongly recommended that ALL batteries be replaced if one of them fails.
